Osawatomie Volunteer Fire Department receives nearly $19,000 in charitable support

The expense of setting up a reserve dispatch and emergency operations center will be a little easier for the City of Osawatomie to manage thanks to a generous donation recently received by the Osawatomie Volunteer Fire Department.

Fire officials learned earlier this month a grant request to the First Option Bank Trustee Foundation was approved in the amount of $18,968. The grant was funded through the Dean and Cleta Smith Charitable Fund.

“By receiving this grant, I believe the city will really benefit by having a back-up dispatch center and an emergency operations center to activate on large-scale responses and disasters,” Osawatomie Fire Chief Brian Love said.

The emergency operations center, Love said, will be constructed at the same time the existing fire department building is being renovated. Currently, the building, located at Seventh and Walnut, houses both the fire department and the city’s electric shop. However, once those electric employees are moved to the public works building, the entire space will be expanded solely for department use.

“In addition to the standard EOC capabilities, this will also include shortwave and amateur radio equipment as a back-up means of long-range communication,” Love said.

The department also recently received another $1,500 grant from the Walmart Distribution Center in Ottawa. The grant will be used for hose and nozzles. Earlier this month, the department received $1,000 in funding from the Paola Walmart as part of the retailer’s community grant program. That funding was also used for fire hose and nozzles.

Earlier this week, the department also received $325 from the Osawatomie First United Methodist Church during the church’s annual emergency services appreciation dinner. The money, Love said, will be used for the department’s public relations efforts.
