Councilman John Farley resigns

Osawatomie City Manager Don Cawby has announced that City Councilman John Farley has

submitted his resignation as a Ward 2 representative. Farley’s resignation is effective immediately.

In his resignation, Farley wrote, “It has been an honor to serve the residents of my ward and the greater city

itself. I look forward to the continued progress of our community thanks to the many efforts of all city staff and

a deliberative governing body.” He did not provide a reason for resigning.

Farley was elected to the council in 2010, and was re-elected in 2012, 2014 and again in April. His term was set

to expire in January 2020.

With his seat now vacant, city officials must find a replacement to fulfill Farley’s unexpired term. Residents

interested in filling the vacancy can complete an application at City Hall. Applications must be submitted by 4:30

p.m. Feb. 1 to be considered. Only residents living within Ward 2 are eligible to apply.

In accordance with city ordinance, the mayor must formally inform the governing body during a council meeting

and form a nominating committee. The committee, consisting of the mayor, council president and the remaining

Ward 2 councilperson, are then tasked with finding a replacement.

The nominating committee has within 40 days from the time the council is notified to recommend a potential

candidate(s). Once the candidate(s) is/are received, a formal motion must be made by the council to accept the

recommendation.

A candidate will only be able to formally fill the vacancy if a majority of the remaining elected council members

vote in favor.
